Please remember any work on gas fires and boiler must be carried out by a qualified CORGI engineer.
1. My house does not have a flue, what can I do?
There are many solutions depending on the type of equipment you are installing. Generally speaking enclosed (Class 2) fires can be accommodated in a SFL Gas Box fitted with a twin walled gas vent such as SFL IL. This can then be enclosed in a false chimney-breast. Living Flame Effect and Decorative (Class1) Fires need a larger diameter chimney similar to that used for solid fuel appliances such as SFL SM.
2. I don't want a chimney sticking out of my roof, what can I do?
Flues for enclosed fires and domestic boilers can usually be terminated at the ridge using a Dunbrik Ridge Vent, SFL Ridge Tile Adaptor and SFL IL Gas Vent.
3. I have an existing chimney; do I need a flue liner?
Although not mandatory in every circumstance, we recommend all existing chimneys be swept and lined. Stainless Steel Flue Lining is fairly cheap and the consequences of gas or condensation seeping through the masonry could be very serious.
4. My chimney terminates in the roof space; can I continue the liner to a ridge tile adaptor?
No, flue liner may only be used within the confines of a masonry chimney.
5. I can't fit the flue onto the slot at the back of my gas fire?
A surprisingly frequent FAQ considering only qualified persons should be carrying out this work. This is because it is not meant to. The closure plate on the back of a fire is designed to fit in or up to a Flue Gas Collection Box such as the SFL Inset Gas Box or other type of the SFL Gas Box. Never attempt to connect a flue directly to the outlet of a fire. This is extremely dangerous.
6. My fire or boiler smells of gas, what should I do?
Turn off the appliance and contact British Gas or a CORGI registered installer immediately. Don't despair the solution may be quite simply, by servicing your appliance or by extending the flue or by fitting a better Terminal or Cowl.
7. There is a smell of smoke in the room, what is wrong?
There are a number of possibilities. It may be air starvation caused by an airtight room or mechanical extract ventilation. Try opening a window and see if the condition improves. The chimney may be restricted or blocked. You will need to contact your local sweep. Don't forget chimneys need regular cleaning (at least twice per year.), We can supply Flue Brushes. The chimney may be of insufficient diameter or the canopy, gather or hearth opening may be incorrect. We can advise on all types of chimney problems. Downdraught may also be a cause and is dealt with in the next question.
8. My fire/boiler blows back when its windy, what can I do?
This is usually due to downdraught in the flue. This is caused by the, location or, type of the flue terminal. On the windward side of the ridge, a pressure zone can force air down the flue. This problem can, often be cured by raising the flue, out of this zone. On the lee side turbulence is caused by the ridge and the can often be cured by fitting H Cowls and other types of anti-downdraught Cowls and Terminals. Our staff would be pleased to advise.
9. Do I need such an expensive chimney to connect my stove, boiler or cooker to an existing chimney?
No, vitreous enamelled steel flue, such as Flamco Supaflue, may be used for this connection, but only for the first six feet from the appliance. For appliances burning Kerosene it may be possible to use products such as Rite Vent's K Vent. Our staff will be happy to advise.
10. How do I know I am getting good advice?
We only recommend products that conform to Building Regulations and comply with applicable British Standards. For applications, requiring flues outside the scope of these regulations, we offer the best quality products available in the U K market. We are a Quality Assured Company to BSEN ISO 9002 and have been designing and installing flues for 20 years.
11. Are there other systems available to those in our shop?
Yes. As an independent retailer of flues and chimneys we are able to offer flues from all the leading manufacturers. The shop only represents a part of our extensive product range. Please contact our sales office for further details.
